Best IPL Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: First 2 Weeks of Do's and Don'ts
By Bella Lux Spa + Family Medical Center | October 12, 2026
I provide IPL Laser Rejuvenation aftercare guidance here in Overland Park, and the single most important rule in the first 48 hours is simple: keep your skin out of heat and out of sun. Cool it down, keep it clean, skip sweating, and don’t restart your “active” skincare too fast. IPL is designed to target sun damage, redness, and uneven pigmentation, so your aftercare is what protects that clearer, more even tone you came in for.
Quick rule for busy schedules: For 24 to 48 hours, keep showers lukewarm, skip the gym, avoid direct sun, and stick to gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturizer, and SPF 30+.
First 0 to 48 hours: cool skin, clean skin, no sweat
Right after IPL Laser Rejuvenation, your skin is doing quiet repair work. I generally recommend you treat it like you’d treat a mild sunburn. Gentle is the whole point.
Do
- Use a cool compress for 10 minutes at a time if you feel warm or flushed.
- Cleanse with a gentle, non-scrubby cleanser and pat dry. No washcloth friction.
- Moisturize with a fragrance-free moisturizer as often as needed to stay comfortable.
- Wear SPF 30+ every morning, even if it’s cloudy.
Don’t
- Don’t take hot showers or use steam rooms or saunas right away. Heat can make redness linger.
- Don’t exercise if it will make you sweat for at least 24 to 48 hours.
- Don’t use retinoids, exfoliating acids (like glycolic or salicylic), scrubs, or strong acne products.
- Don’t pick at anything that looks dry, flaky, or slightly crusted.
If you’re driving home through the Metcalf/75th corridor (Town Center Plaza area), a quick cooling tip that actually helps is keeping your car air a little cooler than usual and avoiding direct sun through an open window. Little heat exposures add up in those first two days.
Days 3 to 7: what’s normal, what to avoid, and why sun rules matter in Overland Park
This is the week when people second-guess themselves. They see redness that comes and goes, or they notice pigmented spots look darker before they look better. That “darkening then fading” can be a normal part of how discoloration clears after IPL.
Here’s what I want you to stick to in week one:
- No direct sun. SPF is not optional. Even in fall and winter, Kansas sun bounces off windshields and concrete, and dry air can make your skin feel tighter.
- No picking or scrubbing. If you get light flaking, let it shed on its own.
- Skip actives for 7 to 14 days. If your skin is sensitive, stay on the cautious side. I’d rather you restart slowly than trigger irritation.
- Be careful with heat. Warm showers are fine, but long hot showers, hot yoga, and hot tubs tend to stir things up.
A simple sunscreen standard: Put SPF on every morning. Reapply if you’re outside for more than a quick walk to the car.
Safe products for week 1 and week 2 (and what to pause)
After IPL, I’m looking for calm, hydrated skin. You don’t need a complicated routine. You need a boring one, for a little while.
Usually safe over-the-counter basics
- Gentle cleanser (no exfoliating beads, no strong fragrance)
- Fragrance-free moisturizer (cream texture is often more comfortable than lotion)
- Mineral or sensitive-skin SPF 30+ (daily)
- Plain occlusive layer if you’re dry (a thin amount, only where you need it)
Pause these for 1 to 2 weeks
- Retinoids and prescription acne products unless I’ve told you otherwise
- AHA/BHA acids, peels, scrubs, dermaplaning at home
- Strong vitamin C formulas if they sting or flush you
If your skin is feeling extra dry, that’s common in Overland Park winters. A richer moisturizer at night is often the difference between “tight and irritated” and “comfortable and healing.”
If you’re planning your next steps, I also break down maintenance timing in my IPL Laser Rejuvenation maintenance guide.
Makeup, workouts, pools, and hot tubs: the real-life timeline
This is the stuff you actually need to plan around. Here’s the general timing I give most people after IPL Laser Rejuvenation.
Makeup
If your skin isn’t irritated, makeup is often fine after 24 hours. If you’re still pink, warm, or stingy, give it another day. Clean brushes and sponges matter more than people think during this window.
Exercise
I generally recommend skipping workouts that cause sweating for 24 to 48 hours. Sweat plus heat can keep inflammation going. If you need movement, keep it easy and cool.
Swimming and hot tubs
Avoid pools, lakes, and hot tubs for at least several days, and longer if your skin is dry or flaking. Chlorine, bacteria, and heat aren’t a great mix for freshly treated skin. If you’re not sure where you fall, I’d rather you call and ask than gamble with irritation.
When to reach out to me (and when it’s just normal healing)
Mild redness, a warm feeling that settles down, darker pigment before it flakes or fades, and a little dryness are all common. What I don’t want you to do is tough it out if something feels off.
Reach out if you notice blistering, spreading redness, increasing pain, drainage, fever, or a sudden change in pigment that worries you. If you’re unsure, that’s reason enough to check in.
“From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt calming, professional, and genuinely welcoming. You can tell they truly care about your overall well-being, not just a quick service, but real healing and self-care.”
, a client
I’m located near the Metcalf/75th corridor (Town Center Plaza area), so quick post-care check-ins are easy to fit in. I also see people coming in from Lenexa, Leawood, Mission, Prairie Village, Shawnee, and Kansas City when they want continuity with their skincare plan.
If you found me by searching med spa near me and you’re also juggling other care, I get it. People like that we can keep things in one place, from a facial spa visit to massage and even a chiropractor appointment. One regular put it plainly: “This place is a one stop shop... You can’t go wrong with this place. Definitely recommend.”
Two-week checkpoint: what I want your skin to look like by day 14
By the end of two weeks, most people are back to their normal routine, with fewer “reactive” days and a more even-looking complexion. This is also when sun discipline really shows. If you protect your skin now, your results tend to look cleaner and last longer.
If you’re building a bigger plan for tone and texture, I’m happy to talk through it. Some people pair IPL with other med spa services over time, and others keep it simple with a series and good maintenance. And if you’re also searching things like botox near me, or fillers near me, I can help you map timing so your skin isn’t doing too much at once.
Friendly reminder: If you’re tempted to “scrub off” dryness, don’t. Moisturize, protect, and let your skin finish the process.

Looking for recovery-friendly self-care while your skin calms down? Keep it gentle. Light massage is usually fine after the first couple days, but skip heavy heat. If massage is on your mind, I offer massage, and I’ll help you pick the right intensity for where you are in healing.
